The charges — all felonies — range in seriousness. If convicted of any in one group he could be sentenced to 2-5 years in prison; if convicted of any in the other group, he could be sentenced to 1-3 years in prison.

As a Steger resident, Schwertfeger had several contacts with Steger and Crete Police until his arrested in 2007 by Steger Police for selling a controlled substance. He pleaded guilty to manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance in February 2008 and was sentenced to six years in prison, with credit for time served in the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

Crete Police Chief Jim Paoletti said this afternoon that the Will County state’s attorney’s office is considering whether to approve charges against an 18-year-old Crete-Monee High School student who brought a knife to school today.

“She’s at the station now,” he said.

Crete Police were summoned to the school around 2 p.m. after the suspect and another student prepared to fight.

Paoletti said the two cheerleaders “faced off, but faculty stepped in before anything happened.”

Paoletti said there is no truth to a Facebook posting that more than the two girls were involved, although he acknowledged that the student population knew the girls intended to fight ahead of time.

“No teachers were injured,” he said.
