‘Reckless’ gunplay garners 3 felony charges

Cash bail was set at $1,000 Monday for a 31-year-old far Southeast Side man who allegedly fired a Colt .38 Super Series 80 handgun into the air five times on July 7.

Efrain Barajas of the 9700 block of South Avenue H in Chicago is charged with one count of reckless discharge of a firearm and two counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

A Will County Sheriff’s Deputy, responding around 11 p.m. to a loud-music complaint on the 29000 block of South Stoney Island Avenue – approximately three miles east-southeast of the intersection of Dixie Highway and Eagle Lake Road – reportedly witnessed Barajas repeatedly discharge the weapon after placing his three children into a sport utility vehicle. Deputies estimated 150-200 persons were present at the time.

Barajas, free on bail, is scheduled to appear at a July 30 preliminary hearing in Will County court in Joliet. Sheriff’s Police also notified the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

Jailed for violating order of protection
A 55-year-old Beecher man is completing his jail sentence for violating an order of protection – nine weeks after being served with the order. Michael D. Elzey formerly of the 1800 block of West Indiana Avenue was sentenced to 162 days – with credit for 81 days served – and placed on 24-months probation on June 11 after pleading guilty. Will County Circuit Court Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes, who could have sentenced Elzey to up to three years in prison on the Class 4 felony charge, also ordered him to undergo medical and psychiatric treatment. Illinois State Police arrested Elzey for the offense during a March 23 traffic stop.

Theft alleged
A 28-year-old Beecher-area man is scheduled to appear in court July 17 for a pretrial hearing on a theft charge stemming from an alleged May 2 offense in unincorporated Will County. Will County Sheriff’s Police took the resident of the 31200 block of South Ashland Avenue into custody July 9 on the misdemeanor charge, filed May 11. The defendant remained in the Will County Adult Detention Facility this morning in lieu of $1,000 cash bail.

Charge upgraded against alleged sex predator in U.P.

Felony charges were filed Wednesday against a convicted sex offender apprehended March 24 in a local park. Rodney T. Ingram, 32, of the 0-100 block of East 101st Street in Chicago is charged with being a sexual predator in a public park, a Class 4 felony punishable by up to three years in prison if convicted. Ingram initially had been charged with a misdemeanor. He previously was convicted in Cook County court of aggravated criminal sexual abuse against a victim under the age of 13, according to Illinois State Police records, which list Ingram as a sex predator. The crime reportedly occurred when he was 22 and the victim was 7.

Burglars take guns, alcohol & minivan
A 2004 Chrysler Town and Country mini-van parked in the driveway of a home on the 23000 block of South Volbrecht Road and 200 bottles of alcohol, numerous tools, several guns, several televisions and several stereos were reported taken July 6. The location is east of the intersection of Illinois Route 394 & Richton Road.

Archway stolen
A 13-foot-tall, 7-foot-wide copper lawn archway was reported taken July 7 from a residential yard on the 24000 block of South State Line Road, located roughly midway between Steger Road and Exchange Street.

Attached garage burglarized
A garden cultivator and a chainsaw were reported stolen July 3 from an attached garage on the 26000 block of South Woodlawn Avenue, roughly one mile due east of the intersection of Illinois Route 394 and Bemis Road.

Car parts stolen
A rear tire and rim were reported stolen July 2 from a Dodge Neon resting on three bricks on the 3000 block of East Poplar Lane in the Willowbrook subdivision.

Allegedly went around RR crossing gate
A 34-year-old University Park woman pleaded not guilty on July 3 to driving around a downed railroad-crossing gate in Crete on May 22. The resident of the 900 block of Morningside Drive is scheduled to appear at an Aug. 7 bench trial in Peotone Field Court on the traffic charge, filed May 30.

Convicted burglar could lose probation

Damieon D. Guidry

A 20-year-old University Park male convicted of burglary in connection with a March 2010 break-in at a home on the 4900 block of Ribbon Court is scheduled to return to court July 30 on a petition to revoke his probation. Damieon D. Guidry of the 500 block of Landau Road was taken into custody June 28 by Will County Sheriff’s Police after undergoing a court-ordered substance-abuse test. Guidry was originally charged with one count of residential burglary and one count of burglary. He received 24 months probation and was ordered to perform 240 hours of community service after pleading guilty to the burglary, a Class 2 felony carrying a sentencing range of up to seven years in prison. Guidry is being held without bail in the Will County Adult Detention Facility in Joliet.

Convicted batterer charged with domestic battery
A 42-year-old Monee woman who pleaded guilty to a combined misdemeanor charge of battery and domestic battery on May 24 in Monee has been charged with committing domestic battery on July 10 in Monee. Tracey L. Peterson of the 25900 block of South Derby Drive, currently free on $250 cash bail, is scheduled to appear in court July 18 for a hearing on prosecution’s motion to increase her bail. Prosecutors also want the court to revoke Peterson’s conditional discharge, which required she serve time in the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

Copper stolen from cell tower
Two copper buss bars were reported taken July 5 from a cell tower on the 25500 block of South LaGrange Road.

PARK FOREST

Cocaine-possession alleged

James A. Stephens

A 59-year-old Park Forest man has been charged with possession of a controlled substance in connection with his July 6 arrest by village police. James A. Stephens of the 23400 block of South Western Avenue allegedly had cocaine when police took him into custody, according to Will County court records. Stephens is scheduled to appear in court July 30 for a preliminary hearing on the Class 4 felony charge, which carries a sentencing range of up to three years if convicted. Stephens is free on bail.

Too-much resistance alleged
A 22-year-old Park Forest man who allegedly resisted Park Forest Police on Oct. 26, 2011 and July 4 was scheduled to appear in court today for a hearing on his motion to reduce his $1,500 cash bond. The resident of the 400 block of Navajo Street was free on $100 cash bond from the first alleged offense, but failed to appear in Will County court for a Feb. 15 pretrial hearing. The bond was increased 15-fold after the second misdemeanor charge was filed.

PEOTONE

Cockfighting alleged

Cain G. Ramirez

A 34-year-old Peotone-area man has been charged with one count of owning an animal for sport fighting, one count of selling equipment for animal fighting and one count of possessing a firearm without a gun permit in connection with Monday’s arrest by Will County Sheriff’s Police.

Cain G. Ramirez of the 4900 block of Kennedy Road reportedly had nearly 50 roosters at his address, located approximately three miles southeast of the village. All of the animals were euthanized.

The charge, filed July 6, is linked to an alleged June 13 offense and involves two felonies and one misdemeanor.

Ramirez, who remained in the Will County Adult Detention Facility this morning in lieu of $2,000 cash bail, was scheduled to appear in Will County court this afternoon.

Domestic battery alleged
A 52-year-old Peotone man from the 400 block of East Crawford Street has been charged with misdemeanor domestic battery in connection with his July 4 arrest by Peotone Police. Additional information was unavailable today.

SAUK VILLAGE

Obstruction trial set for Sept. 5
A 57-year-old Sauk Village man is scheduled to appear in Will County court Sept. 5 for a jury trial on a misdemeanor charge of obstructing identification. The charge stems from the March 31 arrest of the resident of the 2600 block of Marigold Drive by Illinois State Police. Sauk Village Police arrested the man on July 5 after he failed to appear in court for a May 1 hearing. He is free on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.

Domestic battery alleged
A 26-year-old Steger man is scheduled to appear in Will County domestic-violence court July 26 for a pretrial hearing on a charge of domestic battery. Steger Police arrested the resident of the 3400 block of Kings Road June 27 for the alleged offense.
